Back Pain Relief at Salem Disc Pain Relief Center

There are many conditions that cause back pain. The leading cause of back pain is certainly the collapse of the intervertebral disc and can produce severe pain if torn. Once it begins to degenerate (COLLAPSE) other elements of the spine are brought into play, joints get jammed together which is painful, the spinal nerves get crowded or inflamed and can produce a wide range of pain. There are some serious conditions that cause back pain, such as cancer, tumors, arthritis and infection. Several common conditions that cause back pain are listed below.

Degenerative Disc Disease
D.D.D. is the process of the disc wearing down or collapsing. In this process the disc may bulge, herniate or disappear completely. Early stages of D.D.D. is usually bulging at the intervertebral  disc.

Bulging Disc
The first stage of the degenerative process in a disc is the bulging stage. As time passes all bulges become worse. Bulges are like letting the air out of your tires. If you drive tires with less than optimal air pressure, they will wear unevenly and be susceptible to damage. The discs in your back are no different. Bulging discs can produce stenosis, sciatic irritation, tears within the disc and herniation.

Spinal Stenosis
Spinal Stenosis results when any opening in the vertebrae is narrowed. This can be where the spinal cord travels or where the nerves exit the spine. The cause can be from several sources; thickening of tissue within the opening, increased arthritic changes in the vertebrae or posterior joints and most frequently as the intervertebral disc deteriorates it spreads out or bulges into the openings. Occasionally the stenosis is caused by congenital defects or developemental defects.

Fibromyalgia
If you can imagine your muscles being in a state of heightened tension for a long period of time, then it is possible for you to understand fibromyalgia. Muscle tissue is not and never has been designed to stay tense 24/7. If muscles constantly react to serious threat, they will stay tight until they become exhausted. Metabolites collect in the tissue causing super sensitivity within the exhausted tissue, resulting in muscle pain. Treatment is often directed at the symptoms, not the cause.

Herniated Disc
Disc Herniation is usually the end product of the degeneration of a disc. Some degeneration is almost always in place before herniation. When the dehydration of a collapsing disc is stressed, the annular rings of the disc tear further and the nucleus of the disc now starts moving posterior and lateral and eventually breaks through the outer wall of the disc. If this extruded material comes in contact with the nerve root, is causes severe pain.

Sciatica
Sciatic Pain is commonly experienced as a sharp electrical pain down the back of the leg, that can radiate from the buttock to the feet. Sacral illiac pain is able to refer pain down to the knee and is often confused with true sciatica. Sciatic pain can have several origins starting with irritation at the disc level, muscle contraction or spasm on the pelvis that presses on the sciatic nerve, irritating it and sending pain down the nerve. The Sciatic Nerve is the largest nerve in the body, composed of nerves from every lumbar spine level. This nerve innervates most of the muscle and sensory aspect of the leg.
