The first stage in the degenerative process in a disc is the bulging stage. As time passes all bulges become worse. Bulges are like letting the air out of your tires. If you drive tires with less than optimal air pressure, they will wear unevenly and be susceptible to damage. The discs in your back are no different. Bulging discs can produce stenosis, sciatic irritation, tears within the disc and herniation.

Disc Herniation is usually the end product of the degeneration of a disc. Some degeneration almost always is in place before herniation. When the dehydration of a collapsing disc is stressed, the annular rings of the disc tear further and the nucleus of the disc now starts moving posterior and lateral and eventually breaks through the outer wall of the disc. If this extruded material comes in contact with the nerve root, it causes severe pain.
