Getting the Correct Treatment Takes You Forward - 6/24/2010
When people hurt from neck or back pain, they will seek whatever treatment they think will get them out of pain the fastest. That is why drugs are so popular. Wanting to get out of pain fast is pretty natural, but often they sacrifice correcting the cause of the pain. Yes, it is possible to get pain relief without correcting what caused the symptoms in the first place. If relief is all that they are after there is a high likelihood that a chronic pain condition will develop. I have come to realize that acute and chronic pain have a lot in common. The underlying cause for these conditions usually goes untreated while efforts are made to just get rid of the pain.
A recent study suggests that most people just want out of pain as quickly as possible and get back to where they were before the pain. The real problem may be this attitude, they want to go back. They want to go back to where they did not hurt. What makes them think that back is good. Back is what got them to where they are now, in pain. They should want to go forward. Treatments that don't correct the problem, that just cover up the pain, are backwards. If you have chronic back pain you probably have a degenerated disc, but degenerated discs are not limited to chronic conditions. If the treatment you are getting is not directed at improving the health of that disc, you are going backwards.
How do you go forward? You find a treatment that tries to change the cause of the problem, not just cover up the pain. In my opinion non-surgical spinal decompression does just that, it changes a major cause of back and neck pain, the deterioration of the intervertebral disc. The worse thing about non-surgical spinal decompression is that it seems to be relegated to chronic cases when the backward treatments have failed. I dream of a world when people are first evaluated for non-surgical spinal decompression before the backward treatments are used.
Here is an example of what I mean...About a month ago a young woman in her 20's came to my office with low back pain that she had since August. She had been in a motor vehicle accident and she had seen many doctors and had received many types of treatment for seven months. She had periods of improvement, but kept having the pain return, then none of the treatments were giving her any relief at all. She rated her pain on a scale of 0-10 to be at a 4 and on another scale for disability due to pain, she scored a 46, significant enough pain to cause disability. The worse part was that she was not referred for an MRI until March, where it was found that her discs had been injured. With one of them mildly herniated. She had received 7 months of treatment that was not really directed at the disc problem. If you are thinking that this is unusual, you are wrong! She has now had one month of non-surgical spinal decompression and her pain scores are 50% better. Getting the correct treatment takes you forward.
